Abstract
The study aims to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes of early and delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis. Thirty patients, with acute cholecystitis, who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy were studied. The patients were to have undergone early laparoscopic cholecystectomy if they had their surgery within 72 hrs of the initial presentation of the symptoms. All those patients, who underwent the surgery after 4 weeks, were considered to be in the delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy group. The early and delayed groups had 19 and 11 patients respectively. The overall occurrence of intraoperative complications was found to be similar in both groups. It was 84.2% in the early laparoscopic cholecystectomy group and in comparison, it was 90.9% in the delayed group. Major bleeding in the early group was 21.1% and that of the delayed group was 18.2%. The bile and gallstone spillage, in our study, among the early and delayed groups were 47.4 and 72.7%, respectively. In our study, the drain requirement in the delayed group was 63.6%, while it was 52.6%, in the early group. The duration of surgery on average was140.5 min in the early group when compared to 95.5 min in the delayed group. There were no statistically significant differences in the outcomes of early and delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis regarding complications. Duration of surgery was more and length of hospital stay less in early group.
